Dorking Area Foodbank News

posted 13 Jun 2015, 21:08 by Crossways Dorking

Distribution Centre: Opened on Tuesday 2nd June. Hours will be Tuesday 4.30-6.30, Thursday 2.30 to 4.30. Judy Peace will be the centre manager for the next 3 months, 22 volunteers have been trained and Ali Studley has sent out the rotas – more help needed in last week of June when many people are on holiday (but you must have done the training to volunteer at the distribution centre)

Warehouse: Opens twice a week,  from 2-4 on Monday and Wednesday. Judith Ellis is the manager. If delivering stuff to the warehouse, please try and get there before 3.30.

Supermarket Food Collection: John Pillkington manages this. The Sainsbury’s collection scheduled for June has been postponed due to the success of the Waitrose collection but we will be having a collection at Tesco over 3 days in July (2nd, 3rd, 4th)  – this is a national event, organised by the Trussell Trust and Tesco.    We will try and  target items that we currently have shortages in. There is also a permanent box in Waitrose which John empties daily.

Church and School Collections: Peter Bunn got an enthusiastic reception to his talk at St Martins School and  John P will be speaking to St Pauls school in July and holding a collection. Churches with an existing Besom food collection box will now have a Foodbank collection box. Plans to have boxes at other churches on hold.   Ideally, these church collections need to be targeted at specific items –  for example Peter Bunn has put a list of 4 items on the St Martin’s/Christian Centre box.

We are also on Facebook (Dorkingareafoodbank) and Twitter (#Dorkingfoodbank) and we now have an expert  (Lyndsey Rhodes ) who will be managing the website.
